The Corporals Killings - 30 years ago today
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporals_killings

I was 16 when this happened and couldn't believe what we were seeing on the TV news. One of the worst things I have ever seen.
The people who stormed their car were like a pack of hyenas.

RIP David Howes and Derek Wood.

It has to be one of if not the most disturbing pieces of TV I've seen.

have read that one had his eyes gouged out and got castrated while the other was impaled on a fence in the park they shot them in before dumping the bodies

sickening

have to remember they were plain clothed and mistaken as loyalist gunmen shortly after 3 people were killed at an IRA funeral by one.

Still...

Probably one of The Troubles darkest moments. Always remember the picture of the priest kneeling over the bodies giving the last rights.

Tensions were high after Stone"s cemetery attack, but that doesn't justify what happened that awful day.

have to remember they were plain clothed and mistaken as loyalist gunmen

From the IRA statement "Our volunteers forcibly removed the two men from the crowd and, after clearly ascertaining their identities from equipment and documentation, we executed them"

So once it was established , they weren't loyalist terrorists, they were killed anyway.

Westside

I read that they had ID cards that had Herford (a base in Germany on)

There is speculation it could have been mistaken for Hereford an SAS base and that was why they were killed (Stones attack being at the funeral of the IRA scum killed in Gibraltar by the SAS)

What a toxic world we live in . How their families coped with this I don't know esp as it was splashed over media.

Remember it well. Previously, as a younger boy, I had obviously seen news footage of IRA bombings and remember each time my mum and dad being utterly openly livid for days on end; but without really knowing why.

All I remember is my dad's saying "Fucking IRA, they should go in and kill the bloody lot of them".

Then I recall seeing the footage of the Corporals Killings and can still recall vividly that sinister and evil feeling. I watched the footage and can remember wondering what it must have been like for them. But I also recall, very vividly, my mum and dad weren't so openly angry about this incident. Much more quiet.

I asked my dad years later about this and he simply replied "Russ, it was because we simply couldn't believe what we had seen".

It was utterly harrowing and very brutal. And to be honest if I can remember a bit of 'game changer'. Many people were so shocked by the brutality of it the incident really set new levels of how people in England viewed the troubles.

A very sickening incident. And I really don't know who their families managed to cope with it.

I expect the IRA will try to justify the Omagh bombing in August(20th anniversary this year) when they butchered 29 people including a woman pregnant with twins.

They truly are evil these scumbags.

Just after the Rock killings IIRC (the SAS at Gibraltar) ... good MATE of mine was out there just after the corp' killings with the Anglians.... told us that the 2 corps were spotters for the Army rather than off duty Signals that took a wrong turn.... but true that they got mistaken as SAS... lot of retribution apparently after by the British Army ... mate was involved in a lot of night time raids on known IRA homes...

Sold

Your info is in line with mine, couple of mates over there in the Marines and 'other' units - apparently brutal retaliation, not always by regulars either, and not confined to Ulster

As a Royal Signals man myself, when I was posted to NI as an 19yr old in 2001, we were shown this video as part of our NIIRT induction.

Even after the GFA, I'd always keep my wits about me and not draw any attention to myself.

Was one of the worst things I had seen...... however, that week 9/11 also happened.

When you look back at the history of London Bombings it makes ISIS look like amateurs. I don't recall being worried and no one was living in fear

I was coming backing from the Commercial road to Canning Town with my mate in a taxi when it felt the car had been shunted in the in the back When we got back to our local we found out it was the iRA and Docklands bombing Always remember the date because it was my birthday Feb 9, 1996

I've never seen those videos they showed on Panorama before of the car pulling up and they dumping the bodies. The dropping of the bodies over the fence when they were still alive was the horrible. What a dirty conflict that was, no one comes out of it well, some evil psychopaths on all sides so much collusion that had dire consequences for all sides.

Was in London at college at the time. Clearly remember how impressed I was that there was no trace of an anti-Irish nationalist backlash in the media. Saw it as a sign of the maturity and political solid-grounding of English politics and society.
